Nurse Amy Hamm was ordered to pay more than $90,000 and suspended from her profession, simply for asserting a biological reality: there are two sexes.
At Réseau féministe québécois, we already reported this case in Le Journal de Montréal and on the microphone of Richard Martineau at Qub radio last April.
That a health professional is treated like a delinquent for having stated a scientific fact demonstrates how much freedom of expression is threatened in Canada.
It is absurd that a nurse has to pay tens of thousands of dollars for saying that women are women and men are men.
This sanction sets a dangerous precedent: if even caregivers no longer have the right to name reality, how can we trust health professionals?
Reminder of the case (according to our text from the Journal de Montréal, April 1, 2025) https://reseau-feministe-quebecois-org.s1.yapla.com/fr/publication/droits-des-femmes-le-congediement-de-la-realite
It is extremely concerning that a healthcare institution considers that 'stating this reality is a reprehensible act deserving of dismissal.' This should alarm not only workers in the medical field but also patients, who must be able to rely on a healthcare system based on science and biological reality, rather than on partisan ideology.
It should also be noted that Amy Hamm advocates for the feminist organization CAWSBAR, which is currently suing the Canadian government to prevent men from accessing women's prisons. Her commitment goes beyond her own case: she defends the rights of all women.
We support Amy Hamm in this ordeal and call for the defense of women's fundamental rights based on sex and not gender.
